Rebecca Shirley, Manager of Student Life Programs, introduces all incoming students to the events planned to welcome the 2018 cohort to The Seattle School community.
Here you will find the schedule of events for your first week of school. Hopefully by now you have received an email from me with this information as well. I am aware that it may feel like a lot. The days will indeed be full. But they are so because of how much will be available to you as you arrive and begin to get acclimated to the building and to the rhythms of life within it. My hope is that you will experience each gathering as an invitation, and the spaces within them as wide open. Know that there will be opportunities for information, for connection, and for you to breathe as you need to.
Feel free to ask any questions as you have them. I so look forward to meeting you!
Spouses/partners/families are welcome at all of these gatherings and childcare is provided for some events. Follow the links throughout the email for more information, including detailed schedules and registration. You will need to register separately for Orientation and (Re)Orientation. Please do so by August 22 (or August 13 if your children will be joining us) to assist us in our planning.
Tuesday, August 14, 5:00-9:00pm, Golden Gardens
Our annual Welcome (Back) BBQ is a dearly-loved Seattle School tradition hosted by Student Leadership. We hope you’ll come, meet some of your classmates, and enjoy one of Seattle’s unbeatable summer nights with us on the beach before the school year gets underway. Student Leadership will be grilling hamburgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Full details are available online »
Monday, August 27, 10:30am-3:00pm
Our entire community comes together to welcome, orient, and matriculate new students and their families. New Student Orientation covers logistical details from changing your address in our databases to posting your first assignment* and getting your picture taken for your student ID. It is also designed to orient you to our community culture and connect you more deeply with each other, faculty, staff, current students, and alumni through story, activity, and tours of the building. Full schedule, details, and registration are available online »
*Your very first assignment as a Seattle School student is collected at Orientation. Stay tuned to the Matriculate blog to learn more about this “Who Am I” assignment.
Tuesday, August 28, 12:00-3:30pm
(Re)Orientation is a time when faculty, staff, returning students, and incoming students gather to reconnect, mark, and reorient to the coming year. (Re)Orientation is an important rhythm as we begin the year together. Participation is required for all students. Full schedule, details, and registration are available online »
