In this issue of The Other Journal, we will explore the valences of identity, both individual and communal, personal and public. We will take up the theme of identity in multiple ways, examining its interconnections with sexuality, pluralism and authenticity, the dissolution and reconstitution of borders, racial divisions, and, yes, even the 2016 presidential campaign.
Fall is always a season of transition as an academic institution, but this fall holds a particular gravitas for The Seattle School community. Together we are holding the tension of endings and new beginnings: We are celebrating the story, labor, and vision that has carried us to our 20th birthday.

Dr. Roy Barsness, Professor of Counseling Psychology, has released a new book, Core Competencies of Relational Psychoanalysis: A Guide to Practice, Study, and Research. Inspired and challenged by his students, Dr. Barsness embarked on a significant qualitative research project with the aim of demystifying the what and the how of relational psychotherapy.
The Board of Trustees of The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Craig Detweiler as the school’s third president. Dr. Detweiler will succeed Dr. Keith R. Anderson on January 1, 2018. In April Keith announced his plan to retire after 12 years as Dean/President effective October 2017.
Dr. Dan Allender and a team from The Allender Center at The Seattle School spent last weekend partnering with Ecclesia church in Houston. They spent time speaking and ministering to individuals who had experienced many levels of trauma during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Here, Dan Allender and Rachael Clinton (MDiv ’10) share a message with the Ecclesia community entitled “A Path Through the Waters,” based on Psalm 77.
