Every year, a graduate from each degree program is selected by their peers and faculty to speak at Commencement around a particular theme. This year, the speakers chose the theme “Crossings.” Below is the speech shared by Ryan Kuja, an MATC graduate. The ancient seafaring people of Polynesia paddled small outrigger canoes thousands of miles on […]
Every year, a graduate is selected by their peers and faculty to share a song at Commencement in honor of the graduating class. Below is the song shared at the 2014 Commencement ceremony by Megan Peters, an MATC graduate. This song carried me through the entire length of this program—the ups and downs, the depth of the […]
Meghan Cappon, The Seattle School Bookstore Manager and wife of recent MACP graduate Peter Cappon, shares the poem she wrote on behalf of family and friends of The Seattle School graduates for the 2014 Commencement ceremony. Watch the clip from 2014 Commencement These grads have done it (hooray!) but certainly not alone. So I’m […]
“I can do this.” That phrase has been a common refrain for me throughout my experience at The Seattle School. Some days the words have entered my mind or left my lips with confidence, believing that I am, in fact, able to pastor and care well for people. Other days, those words come out with […]
The transition from life as a student at The Seattle School to that of an alumnus is an important season for each graduating student. The years spent at The Seattle School are formative for each student in their own way, and commencement is a time to both mark endings and celebrate new beginnings. Lauree Fletcher, […]
I love Preview Weekends. I have plenty of reasons not to. As a student worker, I spends Saturdays single-handedly covering both the library and the front desk. It’s not an incredibly heavy workload, but for those few hours I am the first resource for a steady stream of students needing anything from paperclips to paper […]
Our stories are like a book unfolding, pages worn and marked, dog-eared to recall at a later time. Sometimes the page turns and we do not love what the next chapter holds. I thought my chapter of graduate school would go a certain way. I entered it with a grand naiveté and glamour around the […]
In the past, I have operated primarily through rationale and logic. Now, at The Seattle School, instead of relying on my ability to comprehend, understand, and analyze, I was being asked to wait, to ponder, and most of all to allow myself to be changed before looking for comprehension. It is scary, however, to stumble […]
I wandered away from The Seattle School, my face red and tears still lingering in my beard. I found my way to a small rocky beach in the sculpture park that overlooked the choppy water toward West Seattle. The sky was nearly pure grey everywhere like it had been for weeks, but over the water […]
I can’t believe I’m in the final days before graduation. What began as an impossible fantasy has become a hard earned accomplishment. As proud as I am of earning a post-graduate degree, something I had not imagined for myself in earlier days, the diploma is merely a signpost, a “pillar of stone” if you will. […]
When my husband and I were engaged, the pastor who married us recommended Mike and I interview couples whose marriages we admire. We asked each person two questions: What have you done well? What would you do differently? We listened intently, hurried back to the car, and transcribed everything we could remember into a notebook […]
