The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology announced that President and Provost Dr. J. Derek McNeil will complete his service to the school in June 2027, concluding a season of leadership marked by institutional resilience, mission clarity, and academic integration.

Dr. McNeil first joined the School’s leadership as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and has served as President and Provost for the past six years. His tenure has spanned a period of significant cultural and institutional change, including the global pandemic, financial restructuring, relocation, curricular transformation, and renewed institutional focus.

Reflecting on his decision, Dr. McNeil shared:

“After much prayer, discernment, and conversation, it feels right to begin preparing for a transition — to let a new set of hands take the wheel and steer the ship forward. These years have been demanding and deeply meaningful. I remain confident that we are part of a much larger story — one in which God is not finished with this school.”

Under Dr. McNeil’s leadership, the school strengthened its commitment to the integration of theology and psychology across its three expressions: its Graduate School, The Allender Center, and the Center for Transforming Engagement. The institution clarified its mission as forming healers and rebuilders equipped to serve God and neighbor in a rapidly changing world.

Dana W. Scannell, PhD, Chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed gratitude for Dr. McNeil’s leadership:

“The Board of Trustees is deeply grateful for Derek’s faithful and courageous leadership. He has guided the School through seasons of challenge with clarity, conviction, and hope. We are confident in the School’s strong foundation and look forward to discerning the next leader who will build upon this work.”

Dr. McNeil will continue to serve fully in his role through June 2027 to ensure a thoughtful and smooth transition. The Board formed a Presidential Search Committee and began its work in January 2026. The committee will lead a national search process, with the goal of presenting finalist candidates to the Board in Spring 2027.
