Seminar Description

The seminar provides an overview of Professional Ethics and Washington State law as applied to mental health counseling. Additional topics will include professionalism, licensure, and common practice issues. A variety of ethical dilemmas confronted in clinical practice and research are explored through case studies, role-plays, lecture, film, the ACA Code of Ethics and WA State RCW’s.

The following areas will be included in the seminar.

  1. Application of present legal, ethical and professional standards, which govern the practice of counseling including but not limited to:
    • multicultural perspectives and diversity issues
    • patient rights and counselor responsibilities
    • confidentiality: ethical and legal issues
    • boundaries and multiple relationships
    • professional training and ongoing supervision
  2. Review of the statutes of the State of Washington and the ethical codes of ACA
  3. Professional liability and risk management issues in the practice of counseling
  4. Distinctions and conflicts between ethics and law.

Six CEU credits are available for this class, and it will fulfill the six required hours in professional ethics and law as required within Washington state.

About the Seminar Facilitators

Seminar co-facilitator Stephanie Neill, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist in private practice, and faculty member at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. She has been in practice in Washington state for the past 23 years. Co-facilitator Christie Lynk is a therapist in private practice, a faculty member at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology, adjunct faculty at Seattle University in the Master of Arts in Existential, Phenomenological Psychology program, and a facilitator for the Whidbey Institute. Christie and Stephanie have been teaching and learning about ethics together for the past nine years.
