Seminar Description

This clinical course exposes the student to a popular and alternative model to the Relational Model of Psychotherapy. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a widely used model in agencies and private practice. This course offers the student a basic course in the fundamentals of the model. Learning outcomes: the student will be able to define and implement dialectical assessment and strategies, tolerance skills, mindfulness skills, emotional regulation skills, and interpersonal skills.

This CEU offering will be also be attended by current students at The Seattle School who are working toward their Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology.

Twelve CEU credits are available for this class.

about the teachers

Dr. Barsness holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology - Los Angeles, a Masters Degree (M.A.) in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA, a Postgraduate Certificate in Family Studies from the Los Angeles Family Institute and has completed an intensive training program in Psychoanalytic Theory from the Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Studies. Dr. Barsness also holds a Clinical Associate Professor appointment at the University of Washington in the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences. Prior to coming to The Seattle School, Dr. Barsness was Director of Clinical Training at Seattle Pacific University. He has also taught at Fuller Theological Seminary and Antioch University. His primary interest is in the intersection of psychoanalytic thought and theology. He is a member of the American Psychological Association; the Christian Association of Psychology, the Center for Object Relations and the NW Center for Psychoanalytic Study.

Campbell White, MA, LMHCA, is a graduate of The Seattle School and currently works as an Assistant Instructor in the MACP program. He also works full-time as a Crisis Intervention Specialist with the King County-sponsored CCORS program through the YMCA's Family Services and Mental Health department. In that role, Campbell often utilizes DBT principles and applications to help clients and their families safely stabilize crises and develop specifically targeted skills as they adapt to various stressors and build a healthier foundation for living and relating. This is Campbell's second year assisting with this seminar.

Jeremy Dew, MA, is a graduate of The Seattle School and currently works as an Assistant Instructor with Campbell. Jeremy has clinical experience from his work in the Counseling Services Department at Atlantic Street Center, a non-profit agency serving children and their families in King County. While Jeremy has some formal training in CBT, he has utilized both CBT and DBT skills training primarily in his work with middle school boys groups around aggression. This is also Jeremy's second year assisting with this seminar.
