washington state CEU & Licensure Requirements
The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology offers assistance in the continuing education process for our alum and practicing clinicians in the State of Washington. In the Summer of 2011 we are launching our new CEU series to assist you in meeting DOH requirements for licensure.
Requirements:
Graduation from a master's or doctoral level educational program in mental health counseling or a related field from an approved college or university. Completion of thirty-six hours of continuing education. At least six of the thirty-six hours must be in professional ethics and law.
Below are the current requirements for LMHC and LMHCA for Washington State
LMHC
Licensed marriage and family therapists, licensed mental health counselors and licensed social workers must complete thirty-six hours of continuing education every two years. At least six of the thirty-six hours must be in professional ethics and law.
LMHCA
Earlier this year, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) clarified the rule that requires applicants for initial licensure as an LMFT, LMCH, LASW or LICSW to complete thirty-six hours of continuing education
prior to full licensure.

Remember, there is no requirement to submit documentation of CEUs to the DOH, unless documentation is specifically requested. Similarly, applicants for initial licensure are not required to submit documentation of their CEUs along with their licensing application. However, new applicants should be prepared to provide documentation if requested by the DOH.
